Wanggo Socia

His work is especially notable for shedding light on the narratives of the LGBTQIA+ community, a subject that has often been overlooked or marginalized in mainstream discourse, particularly in the northeastern region of India.

As a writer, Wanggo stands out for his ability to weave personal and collective experiences into his storytelling, creating a rich tapestry of emotion, struggle, and resilience. His first book, I Recalled My Past, published in 2021, is a deeply personal reflection that resonated with many readers, not just for its literary quality but also for its courage in addressing themes of identity and belonging. The book marked him as one of the youngest and most promising authors from Arunachal Pradesh, making him a trailblazer in a region where literature is often intertwined with the oral traditions of its many indigenous communities.

In the same year, Wanggo co-authored A Head Full of Dreams, a work that further established his reputation as a voice for change. His writing is known for its lyrical beauty, depth, and a strong undercurrent of activism, which seeks to challenge societal norms and push the boundaries of conventional narratives.

2021 was a pivotal year for Wanggo, as it also saw him being honored as the Global Climate Strike Poetry Winner. This accolade not only recognized his poetic talents but also highlighted his commitment to environmental issues—a cause deeply connected to his roots in the ecologically rich yet fragile landscape of Arunachal Pradesh. His poetry often reflects this connection to nature, as well as his broader concerns about social justice and human rights.

Beyond his writing, Wanggo has played a crucial role in the literary development of his home state. Recognizing the need for a platform to nurture and promote local literary talent, he joined forces with other writers to establish the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) in Tirap. As the General Secretary of the Tirap unit, he has been at the forefront of organizing a wide array of literary activities, including workshops, book discussions, literature festivals, and reading sessions. These initiatives have not only encouraged local writers but have also helped to preserve and promote the rich literary heritage of the region.

Wanggo's influence extends beyond APLS, as he is actively involved with prestigious literary organizations such as the Sahitya Akademi and the All India Tribal Writers, as well as the Din-Din Club. Through these associations, he has been instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of indigenous and tribal voices in the national literary landscape. His work with these organizations often focuses on creating spaces for dialogue, exchange, and the celebration of diverse literary traditions.

Some of Wanggo’s most acclaimed works include Mai Hara Nahi is Jang Mai, a powerful poem that speaks to resilience in the face of adversity; Meera, a poignant exploration of identity and love; Ham Vah Kavi Hai, which delves into the role of the poet in society; and Mujhe Aavam Tak Pahunchana Tha, a work that reflects his commitment to bringing marginalized voices to the forefront.

Wanggo Socia’s literary achievements and his activism have made him a key figure in not just the literary scene of Arunachal Pradesh but also in the broader context of Indian literature. His work continues to inspire and challenge, pushing readers to confront uncomfortable truths while also offering a sense of hope and possibility. Through his writing and his activism, Wanggo is not just telling stories—he is building bridges, fostering understanding, and advocating for a more inclusive and just society.
